In This Issue

Dear ASHRAE Members and Friends:

What's not to love about February? Plenty of snow, bone-chilling temperatures, no football to be seen for months, furry rodents to remind us that we're only halfway through winter-you name it. There's good reason this is the shortest month of the year. Think Spring.

Our January meeting was very well attended. Members and guests were treated to a very interesting and informative presentation by Tracey Jumper on commissioning processes for new and existing buildings. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 18th at the Holiday Inn-Harrisburg East. Dunstan Macauley will be our guest and will present a talk on Sustainability in Developing Countries. This meeting will also be Membership Promotion night, so if you have a friend or colleague that you would like to introduce to ASHRAE, please bring them along.

We will be having two events in March. On Wednesday, March 4, we will be hosting a tour of the Turkey Hill Dairy, where we'll be able to see the inner workings of the dairy's processing and production facilities. And yes, ice cream and iced tea for everyone! On Wednesday, March 18, we will hold our second Product Show in as many years. We'd like this one to be bigger and better attended than the first one, so vendors, please get signed up to reserve a table, and members, mark your calendars!

Lastly, the chapter is currently forming a nominating committee in order to identify candidates to serve on next year's Board of Governors. If you have any interest in serving on this committee, or would like to make a nomination for next year's board, please contact me.

Best regards,

Michael Conchilla, PE, CEM, ASHRAE BEAP
President, Central PA ASHRAE

Technical Session Topic:

Countries on the continent of Africa have great natural resources in terms of minerals, energy, and good climate. However these resources need to be developed for the benefit of its peoples. It has a large (around 1 billion) population which is spread across the continent in numerous population centres which generally lack the amenities and services that most developed countries take for granted. It would be easy to assume that sustainable development should follow 'western' examples with migration from countryside to modern cities but the opposite is more likely to happen and more sustainable given the wide distribution of natural resource, renewable energy and peoples. This seminar identifies key issues and how developed countries can be pro-active in guiding Africa toward sustainable development.

Dunstan Macauley, P.E. has 20 years of experience in the HVAC industry specializing in the design of a variety of systems for commercial and institutional projects. He is currently a Senior Associate at WSP, where he is actively involved in project management and design of commercial and institutional facilities.
