In This Issue

Dear ASHRAE Members and Friends:

Well it's finally starting to feel like fall. The air is cooler, the days are shorter, and the trees are giving up their leaves. Dare I say that winter is just around the corner. I'm not quite sure that I've fully recovered from last year's brutal winter. Let's hope that calmer weather prevails.

Last month's chapter meeting was "jam-packed" with activity. Nearly 50 members and guests attended as we recognized our Past Presidents, 14 of which were in attendance, as well a long list of generous donors to ASHRAE Research. The chapter also presented Chapter Service Awards to four of our members, all of which are also Past Presidents. Congratulations to Tom Long, Todd Postlethwait, Mark Graybill, and Andrew Odell. We thank you for your past and current service to our chapter.

For the technical program, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer James Tauby gave an engaging talk on the topic of seismic restraint of mechanical systems, complete with plenty of visual aids.

Our next chapter meeting will be held on Tuesday November 18, instead of the normal third Wednesday. We will again be joining with AFE, ASME, AEE and USGBC in hosting the Energy Conservation Forum at Armstrong World Headquarters. Topics presented will include energy trends, lighting efficiency, energy benchmarking, roofing and envelope energy losses, and chiller efficiency. Multiple PDHs will be awarded for attending, so it's definitely worth the price of admission.

A brief update on the chapter LinkedIn group; We currently have 90 members and counting. If you use LinkedIn, please join our group. And if you already have joined, please feel free to share thoughts or start discussions that you think are relevant to the mission of ASHRAE and would be of interest to our members.

Lastly, we are planning another YEA Happy Hour for early December at Tröegs Brewery in Hershey. All chapter members, young and young at heart, are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

I hope to see everyone at the Energy Conservation Forum at Armstrong in Lancaster.

Best regards,

Michael Conchilla, PE, CEM, ASHRAE BEAP
President, Central PA ASHRAE

Grassroots Government Affairs

Pennsylvania House Bill 34 and ASHRAE

Pennsylvania House Bill 34 is an Act requiring the design, construction and renovation of certain State-owned or State-leased buildings to comply with specified energy and environmental building standards. The bill passed the State House last year and has now been re-referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Of interest to ASHRAE is that it mentions ASHRAE Standard 90.1 specifically. It also alludes to other areas of interest for ASHRAE such as indoor air quality and environmental health as well as building rating systems.

Time for ASHRAE member input is limited. The Grassroots Government Activities Committees (GGAC) of all PA ASHRAE chapters are coordinating efforts on how to best advocate the benefits of utilizing ASHRAE standards in the bill. Individual Chapter members can contact their State Senators in support, and can also contact our GGAC chair Phil Groff with comments, or if they are interested in participating on the GGAC.
