Development and Application of Performance Measurement Protocols for Commercial Buildings

This presentation describes ASHRAE developments in the establishment of performance measurement protocols for commercial buildings, as presented in two recent ASHRAE publications: Performance Measurement Protocols for Commercial Buildings (2010) and Performance Measurement Protocols for Commercial Buildings: Best Practices Guide (2012). Both documents address energy, water, and IEQ (thermal comfort, IAQ, lighting, acoustics) measures. Applications of the PMP document to the ASHRAE HQ building in Atlanta, Georgia will be presented. Also, results of field tests that evaluated the protocols as applied to an office building, will also be described. These applications and field tests indicated that while the protocols are useful, the detail at the intermediate and advanced levels renders them cumbersome for use by the practitioner. This prompted the development of the Best Practices Guide.

This paper also describes this Best Practices Guide, which provides practical, step-by-step procedures for continuously evaluating and improving building performance throughout the building’s service life. The Guide supports integrated commissioning and O&M activities to reduce operating costs, without sacrificing the health, comfort, and productivity of the building occupants.

Bruce Hunn served as ASHRAE’s Director of Strategic Technical Programs since 2008, retiring June 30, 2010. Prior to that, he served as the Society’s Director of Technology since 1997. Bruce HunnHe currently is an active member of ASHRAE, serving on Technical Committee 7.6 (Building Energy Performance) and Standard Project Committee 211 (Building Energy Audit Procedures), and continues to consult on selected ASHRAE Special Projects related to building performance metrics.

While on ASHRAE staff Hunn oversaw ASHRAE’s special projects, such as the Advanced Energy Design Guide series, the Advanced indoor Air Quality Guide, the Performance Measurement Protocols for Commercial Buildings, and the 2012 publication Performance Measurement Protocols: Best Practices Guide. He developed strategic collaborations with several other organizations and Federal agencies; he served on the Research Committee and Technical and Scientific Advisory Committee of the US Green Buildings Council from 2006-2009, and the USGBC Research Advisory Committee from 2007-2012.

Prior to joining ASHRAE, Hunn served as head of the Building Energy Systems Program, Center for Energy Studies, the University of Texas at Austin. There, he directed research programs addressing energy use in buildings, including developing and applying building energy analysis computer programs in the analysis of heating/cooling systems for reduced peak demand and fossil fuel use in buildings. He also developed a building energy standard for the state of Texas and headed a five-year study on energy use patterns in Texas state facilities.

In addition to being an ASHRAE Fellow, he is a Fellow of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES). He has held several leadership positions in ASES, including chairman in 1986 and 1987.

Hunn has authored or co-authored 107 articles, technical reports and papers, along with eight books or chapters, including Solar Heating Technologies: Fundamentals and Applications. He has given numerous presentations on topics related to passive solar energy, energy efficiency in buildings, and fabric solar shades for residential and commercial buildings.

He holds a doctorate, a master of science and a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, as well as a bachelor of arts in engineering from the University of Redlands.

All attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance documenting 1.0 Professional Development Hours.
