2013-2014 Board President's Message
2013-2014 Committee Chairs

In This Issue

Dear Members,

February is almost over and we are heading into March soon which means spring is around the corner. Hopefully we can leave the below average temperature behind us as well as the overabundance of snow! Even though my tenure is coming to an end, we are going to go out with a bang. We still have great speakers and some social of events you can still attend.

I would like to thank Walt Saunders and Dale Stauffer from PROAC for presenting last month about LEED credits for IEQ and HVAC maintenance and hygiene for IEQ. Based on the feedback and interaction at the meeting it was well received.

The Central PA chapter is also currently forming the nomination committee for the 2014-2015 ASHRAE year. I would invite anyone who has an interest in joining a committee or sitting on the board for next year to please reach out to me via email ( or phone (484-553-5640). There are many opportunities and my involvement has been a very rewarding experience that I wish everyone could experience.

The next meeting will be on March 12th at the Holliday Inn Harrisburg. March’s technical session topic will be “Air Distribution Design, Diffuser Selection and Displacement Ventilation” presented by Randy Zimmerman of Titus. Please come and join us at 5:00pm for the social hour followed by dinner and the presentation.

March 26th also marks our first YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE) networking event for this year. It is tailored to our members 35 years and younger, but is open to all members. Hajoca Lancaster will be sponsoring the event which wil be held at Troegs Brewery in Hershey, PA. So please come out and help us make this new endeavor a great success!

Please check our website ( for additional event information and schedules. Thank you for supporting your Central PA chapter of ASHRAE.

Think Spring,

David Bender, President, Central PA ASHRAE

ASHRAE Technology Awards

If you have a recent project you feel is worthy of recognition due to its innovation in design, then consider submitting the project for an ASHRAE Technology Award.

The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building design in the areas of occupant comfort, indoor air quality and energy conservation. Their designs incorporate ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and IAQ. Performance is proven through one year’s actual, verifiable operating data.

The purpose of the ASHRAE Technology Awards program is to:

  • Recognize ASHRAE members who design and/or conceive innovative technological concepts that are proven through actual operating data
  • Communicate innovative systems designs to other ASHRAE members
  • Highlight technological achievements of ASHRAE to others, including associated professionals and societies worldwide, as well as building and facility owners.

Each year the Society may present awards in six categories: Commercial Buildings (New and Existing); Institutional Buildings (New and Existing) (Educational Facilities and Other Institutional); Health Care Facilities (New and Existing); Industrial Facilities or Processes (New and Existing); Public Assembly (New and Existing); Residential (New and Existing). For each category first, second, and honorable mention winners may be named. Also, one of the category first place winners may be selected to receive the ASHRAE Award of Engineering Excellence. The recipient will have demonstrated the best overall compliance with the judging criteria.

Detailed information about the program may be found on the Society website by following this link:
Technology Award Program Overview, Requirements, Judging Criteria and Helpful Hints

Entries in the Chapter competition will be judged in late spring/early summer. If you have any questions regarding the submittal process, please contact Mike Conchilla, CTTC Chair at 717-648-8192 or
