President's Message
In This Issue

Dear Members,

Thank you all who attended September’s meeting! We had over 30 members present for our kickoff meeting focused on Data Centers. Thank you also to our presenter, Nicholas D. Babiak, a fellow Central PA member.

Another Central PA ASHRAE member we should recognize is William McQuade. This January at the Winter Conference in Dallas, Texas, Bill will be formally recognized for his elevated membership grade to ASHRAE Fellow. This will take place on January 26, 2013 at 3:15PM during the Plenary Session. If you are planning to attend the winter conference, please try to attend the session to show your support! I am sure Bill would appreciate seeing some familiar faces as he receives his award!

Our next meeting is one of my favorite meetings of the fall – Past President’s/History night. Below is a list of past presidents from 1960-today. If someone you know is on this list, please encourage them to attend! Also – if you have a piece of history related to the Central PA Chapter, please bring it with you so we may put it on display.

Building Energy Performance Labeling for Design and Operation

THURSDAY, November 8, 2012

Location: Courtyard by Marriott Harrisburg/Hershey
725 Eisenhower Boulevard
Harrisburg, PA 17111
http://www.marriott.com/harcy

Join us for a presentation by PSU PhD Candidate and Level I & II Energy Auditor

Ke Xu, BEMP, BEAP
PhD Candidate Department of Architectural Engineering Pennsylvania State University

Ke Xu received his BEng from Harbin Institute of Technology in China and MSc from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) AE department. He has worked as a research assistant in the Energy System Laboratory at UNL for three years, implementing and participating in multiple Level I and II energy audits for existing commercial buildings and continuous commissioning projects before he entered Penn State.

His current research focuses on the minimum instrumentation required to capture existing building key operational features required to develop “as-operating” whole building energy models with support from the Energy Efficient Buildings (EEB)-Hub. Ke is involved in both ASHRAE – Building Energy Quotient (BEQ) Labeling Program – pilot project and DOE’s Asset Rating Tool – pilot phase project. He holds both ASHRAE Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) and Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) certifications.

A building’s energy use is mainly determined by its inherent design, operation and local weather conditions. Unlike existing building energy benchmarking systems (ENERGY STAR® program and U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating systems) that only evaluate either building operation energy performance or design practice, the newly launched ASHRAE building Energy Quotient (bEQ) labeling system contains rating methods for both performance and design with emphasis on building energy use.

This presentation includes an overview of the bEQ rating systems using an office building located in Philadelphia Navy Yard as a case study to show step-by-step how to implement bEQ asset and operation rating to an existing building. Since this same building was also evaluated by a pilot DOE – Commercial Building Asset Rating Tool, the two asset rating methodologies will be compared and discussed. Ke will also share some of his personal experiences in preparing for the ASHRAE BEMP and BEAP exams.

Future City

The local Future City Region is looking for volunteers interested in joining their Steering Committee. Unfamiliar with Future City? Future City is a competition for local school students, grades 6 through 8. The event gives students an opportunity to create their vision of the future through the design of a city. Each team creates their city on computers using the SimCity software, and builds a three-dimensional, tabletop model to scale. The teams present their design at the competition before a panel of engineer judges. Each team also submits a Research Essay on a provided topic -- this year's topic deals with stormwater. If you are willing to help as we prepare for the next competition to be help in January, 2013 or are interested in mentoring students or judging, please contact Steve Roman at sroman@wbcm.com.
